Toyota Motor Corporation has teamed up with fellow automakers Subaru and Mazda to develop new compact engines tailored to electrification and the pursuit of carbon neutrality.

This was announced at a media event where they displayed the smaller engines and revealed their aim to decarbonise internal combustion engine cars by making them compatible with various carbon-neutral fuels.

Upon this announcement, the CEOs of the three companies made the following joint statement:

“In order to provide our customers with diverse options to achieve carbon neutrality, it is necessary to take on the challenge of evolving engines that are in tune with the energy environment of the future,” said Koji Sato, CEO, of Toyota.

“Given the rotary engine’s compatibility with electrification and carbon-neutral fuels, Mazda will continue to develop the technology through co-creation and competition to ensure it can contribute broadly to society,” said Masahiro Moro, President and CEO, of Mazda.

Toyota said that smaller engines would improve design potential and aerodynamic performance, helping them comply with increasingly strict regulations on vehicle emissions.
