Aon’s Digital Economy Chief Commercial Officer Benjamin Hindson explores some of the key risks facing mobility businesses in 2024.
Article written by Aon and published by MOVEMNT
The risk environment for the mobility sector continues to grow in its scope and complexity. Whether dealing with global supply chain issues against an increasingly fraught geo-political backdrop, or managing a shortage of talent in critical areas like digital and data, mobility businesses cannot afford to be complacent when considering the risks that could derail their operations.
While Aon’s recently published 2023/24 Global Risk Management Survey – which identifies the top risks impacting organisations across all sectors – finds that cyber attack is the number one risk, it’s important to take a closer look at some of the other top risks that mobility organisations will need to manage and mitigate throughout 2024 and beyond.
1. Commodity Pricing/Scarcity of Materials
Amongst these top risks is the growing challenge of sourcing the new materials needed. By the end of the decade the demand for lithium – a critical material for battery producers – is expected to more than double to over 4 million metric tons. Given the importance of lithium for electric vehicles, some commentators such as the International Energy Agency have warned that the global economy has already seen periods – 2021 and 2022 – when the supply of lithium was not able to keep up with demand, leading to some EV OEMs facing insolvency due to uncertainty around their battery supply. To try and introduce more certainty, some countries have introduced state aid to guarantee battery supply, such as the US with a US$3 billion funding programme for battery production. But many of these facilities will take time to come online and, in the meantime, the risk of not being able to source the batteries needed will grow.
2. Supply Chain and Distribution Failures
Another key risk – and one closely linked to the shortage of materials – is the growing complexity of the supply chain. In addition to areas like battery production, the availability of components such as microchips is just as critical and can be interrupted by anything from transport issues, to a political risk problem in the chip producing country. As vehicles become increasingly complex, and new technologies are added, OEMs need to access new components where they may not have had as much experience. Governments are again stepping in by looking at ways they can domesticate critical parts of the supply chain to make supply less vulnerable to geo-political events.
3. Talent Wars
Of course, good businesses need more than just parts and materials to make their products and the human talent requirements for the mobility sector are rapidly shifting. For businesses to continue to innovate and meet their customers’ demands and expectations, and understand their challenges, they need access to a talent pool wholly different to the skillsets needed less than a decade ago. As mobility gets more digital, employees with those skillsets are at an absolute premium. Whether it’s data scientists or software engineers, the demand for these different skills means it is critical, for example, that mobility businesses carefully consider that where they build their facilities has ready access to the right talent pool with a healthy pipeline of future talent. And that they develop an attractive employee proposition that can compete with all the other industries also on the hunt for similar skillsets.
4. Regulatory and Legislative Changes
Regulatory risk is also rapidly changing, and mobility businesses will need to make sure they are in a position both to meet their regulatory requirements but also take advantage of the possible opportunities that regulatory changes could offer. It’s expected that the UK government will firm up legislation around micromobility soon which will have an impact on e-scooter and e-bike providers, while the Automated Vehicles Bill currently making its way through parliament in the UK will also create new opportunities for autonomous vehicles.
In addition, mobility businesses will need to continue to have a careful eye on privacy issues given the amount of data they are collecting when it comes to areas like users’ movements. As custodians of huge amounts of personal data, maintaining compliance and protecting personal information in the right way will continue to be a high priority in terms of risk mitigation.
5. Brand and Reputation
Aon’s Global Risk Management Survey regularly reports loss of brand and reputation as a top risk due to the adverse impact a negative event can quickly have on the value or even survivability of a business. Emerging mobility technologies are particularly susceptible to damaging headlines if a battery explodes or an autonomous vehicle hits a pedestrian. It might be that they experience far less adverse issues than their more traditional mobility counterparts but, until the technologies become more commonplace, expect any problems to attract a disproportionate share of negative media coverage.
6. Failure to Innovate
Another top risk for mobility is a failure to innovate. Customer expectations and needs in the mobility space change rapidly and the risk of not evolving to meet those needs can quickly leave businesses behind. This is no small challenge, given it can take as much as seven years to take a vehicle from design to production and a lot can change in that time. A focus on creating agile businesses that can be more responsive to customers’ demands will help the mobility sector mitigate this potential risk.
Risk Mitigation and Management is Critical
It’s likely that all these top risks will continue to evolve and change, and be joined or overtaken by others which means it’s critical that every business in the mobility sector, wherever it is in its growth journey – from startup to venture funded and beyond – has a clear perspective on its key risks and a clear plan of risk mitigation and management.

Article written by Aon and published by MOVEMNT
Aon is thrilled to be at MOVE 2024 in London for a second year, supporting mobility organisations on their growth journey.
Innovation in Future Mobility continues to create new and complex risks, and these businesses face the same headwinds as any business in the current macro social and economic climate. In times of uncertainty and volatility, organisations need a professional services firm that can help them to navigate a path to growth.
Aon sees insurance as a gatekeeper for innovation – capital investment won’t flow unless it can be protected, and investors will prioritise organisations that show strength and resiliency to grow and give back a return.

At MOVE 2023, Jillian Slyfield, Chief Innovation Officer (pictured above) at Aon challenged MOVE attendees – “ask more of your broker, and of the insurance industry at large. The insurance value chain must innovate to transform risk into opportunity and unlock value for Future Mobility clients.”
Insurance and Future Mobility might not be front of mind in many eyes, but Slyfield champions that “insurance is a critical qualification for enabling Future Mobility growth and adoption. Future Mobility business models and technologies are creating new risk complexities, but insurance players have historically struggled to keep pace”.
This is where Aon is stepping in and stepping up as an industry leader.
“We see mobility organisations engaging in a costly and inefficient purchasing journey, as insurance players are challenged to understand evolving technology, transform methodologies, and add value,” said Slyfield.
For the many Future Mobility organisations attending MOVE 2024, the story will be about fast-paced growth; the ambition and ability to go from a start-up to scale-up business that can seamlessly move into chosen markets and locations.

Aon’s keynote speaker at MOVE 2024 is Curtis Scott, Executive Vice President, Future Mobility and Digital Economy at Aon. Curtis joined Aon in 2023, previously at Lyft and Uber:
“We find ourselves at a transformative crossroads, where the dynamics of mobility are rapidly evolving. In this era of changing consumer behaviours and technological advancements in mobility assets, the way we perceive and utilise vehicles is undergoing a swift revolution.
“Even for traditional car ownership, innovative direct digital sales models are reshaping customer engagement, offering embedded insurance and other services. At MOVE, I’m eager to share Aon’s advancements, highlighting our heightened capabilities, especially our newly acquired mobility analytics platform which empowers our clients to make data driven decisions across their operations,” said Scott.
Aon recently published the 9th edition of it’s Global Risk Management Survey, which asked almost 3,000 business leaders about their biggest risks and how they manage/mitigate them. For mobility businesses, key risks identified include Commodity Pricing/Scarcity of Materials, Supply Chain and Distribution Failures, Talent Wars, and Regulatory and Legislative Changes. Additional to this and key for future mobility businesses is Brand/Reputation and Failure to Innovate.
“The so-called war for talent is far from over,” said Scott, “no matter the segment served we know that attracting and keeping the best talent is a huge issue. Whether it is programme engineering, platform capability or supply of drivers to a platform, competition remains intense. Clients need to be able to differentiate themselves to win talent and create stickiness to keep them when competitors come knocking. That is the power of Aon, to support businesses to develop winning strategies”.

Over the next months, Aon will be exploring in more detail some of the key risks and solutions that future mobility businesses are facing – including discussing what the new UK AV bill means for the mobility ecosystem, the use of data feeding insurance, and valuation and protection of Intellectual Property.
“We see the opportunity for new ways of working with these businesses – using enriched data and insights that exist around every part of the insurance and risk advisory transaction to power analytics enabling new products, new insights and new services, so future mobility companies can scale, wherever they are on their growth journey” concludes Scott.

Ever been to MOVE? If you haven’t, it’s quite an eye opener. Autonomous vehicles crawling round the expo floor as investors thrash it out with tech bros to find the next biggest thing. On stage, energy and payments giants implore the audience to step into the future with them. And, as you reach for a business card, another e-scooter whizzes past. Seems an eclectic mix, right? Well, that seems to be the point of MOVE, an event designed to connect the dots on all things mobility.
The brochure of the event and coverage leading up to it detailed what to expect; a vibrant gathering of thousands of attendees, speakers and start-ups from across the mobility spectrum. And that’s what you get!
As soon as you walk through the doors of the event, you’re met with a red lit and wooden floored stand from AON, with an attendee trying out their race driver simulation that is whirring away with excitement. To the right is a huge Level 4 autonomous shuttle bus from ZF in all its glory, boasting a sleek shiny-grey exterior and absolutely no driver seat – which felt a bit weird at first.
Walking down through the conference, every stand exhibited its own respective aesthetic met with an impressive array of the latest mobility products. The floor was saturated with EV charging stations, electric mini car racetracks, test tracks, screen displays and so much more. A HGV, micro-car, electric motorcycle, e-scooter and e-bike are among the many real vehicle displays that were dotted all around the event.
MOVE boasts itself as the premier mobility event to meet all of the industry’s best experts. In light of this, there were some pretty impressive names that stood out in the crowd of booths: WAE, Mastercard, Hogan Lovells, AON and Dassault Systémes.

With an impressive 17 stages, the event claimed to host a total of 700 talks, all presented by industry experts who respectively delved into their own unique mobility-related discussions on trending topics like smart cities, battery tech, electric vehicles, fleet management and even mining. The engaging talks and panel discussions allowed speakers to share their insights and expertise on concerns, issues, excitements and anticipations for the mobility world. Angela Strand gave some insightful opinions on the state of the world’s clean energy transition, as well as providing a fascinating conversation on the Inflation Reduction Act.
Other inspiring talks made me question my pre-determined perceptions of urban mobility, including Dott’s discussion on the 15-minute city concept, Rod King’s 20s Plenty Campaign and Ryd’s conversation with Mastercard about the acceleration of frictionless payments in urban mobility.
But it was not all just a parade of mobility companies talking about their products and success, there was a poignant message that rose above all the brightly lit branding and buzzing ambience. The event stayed true to its word on keeping the issue of sustainability key to the heart of the event. There was not a single attendee that I encountered who didn’t demonstrate their love and appreciation for using mobility to keep the planet green. The event provided an invaluable platform for attendees to grasp and elaborate on the evolution of the mobility ecosystem. MOVE provided a space for learning as well as teaching, and helped its attendees to acknowledge all of the collective efforts of the industry in combatting the climate emergency.
Another touching moment occurred on Day Two of the event, when Nicoletta Gennaro, Group Head of Marketing at Ascendal Group, was awarded the Women in Mobility Award 2023. Her heartfelt acceptance speech emphasised her love for the positive impact of her work in the mobility industry. Gennaro secured victory with a narrow 25-vote margin over the runner-up, highlighting her significant contributions and inspiring influence. The award ceremony was a powerful tribute to the hard-working women in mobility and their major contributions to the industry’s acceleration.
In the later hours of Day Two at MOVE, Cormac Cronin Martin, the Project Director of the event, expressed the exhilaration that he experienced from the two-day conference, stating: “MOVE 2023 was the best MOVE yet – more attendees, speakers, start-ups and exhibitors than ever before. And the feedback we’re getting is that this is a unique and valuable community that’s only going to grow.”
MOVE sponsors and speakers were also interviewed at the interview booth, offering additional insights and perspectives on the event’s innovations and advancements. I spoke to John Wall, who kindly explained to me how exactly BlackBerry QNX fit into the space of mobility. Using the analogy of a plumber, he elaborated that their software helps to provide the foundation for software-defined vehicles, which automakers can then build the car on top of. As someone who is not quite yet an expert in mobility terminology, I valued his passionate yet patient nature in explaining his product.
Every interviewee willingly highlighted their MOVE pledges for the upcoming year and gave a personal or company-governed pledge towards creating increased sustainability in the mobility industry through their products, services and daily lifestyle choices. But only time will tell if they can live up to their promises.
In conclusion, MOVE 2023 proved to be an unparalleled platform for the mobility industry to converge, collaborate and innovate. With its focus on sustainability and specialised platform for businesses to showcase their products, the event served as a catalyst for driving positive change in the world of mobility. As the event continues to grow and evolve, it promises to remain at the forefront of shaping the future of transportation and mobility worldwide.
As the world continues to grapple with environmental challenges and the need for more efficient and eco-friendly transportation solutions, my expectations for MOVE 2024 remain high, as the future event will likely play a big role in showcasing cutting-edge technologies and strategies that address these pressing issues.
