Chinese-carmaker BYD has unveiled the largest-to-date cargo ship for transporting the auto-manufacturer’s vehicles.

Measuring at 219-metres long, the BYD Shenzhen can carry up to 9,200 cars and is part of the company’s plan to have eight cargo ships by 2026.

BYD has claimed that the ship is the “world’s most environmentally friendly car carrier,” due to its dual-fuel technology, allowing it to run on marine diesel and LNG traditional marine fuel.

It is also expected that batteries will be shipped onboard amongst the thousands of vehicles it can carry, eliminating the need for a third-party.

BYD launched its first-ever carrier in January 2024, called the BYD Explorer. All of the company’s carriers have been designed as RoRo vessels, meaning “roll-on/roll-off” so the vehicles can be driven on and off the ships via ramps.

More details on the new ship are being awaited.
