Chairman of CATL, Robin Zeng, has claimed that Elon Musk’s 4680 cylindrical battery cell tech “is going to fail and never be successful”.
CATL, the world’s largest EV battery company, develop batteries which go inside Tesla vehicles and specialise in developing lithium iron phosphate batteries
Musk, CEO of Tesla, has developed “tabless” 4680 cells which are supposed to have “five times” more energy capacity, according to The Verge.
However, when Musk visited Zeng in China, the Chairman concluded from the meeting that the Tesla CEO’s knowledge was not adequate.
“We had a very big debate, and I showed him. He was silent. He doesn’t know how to make a battery,” Zeng told Reuters.
Zeng also claimed that Musk is “overpromising” timelines. The Chairman reckons the batteries could be up-to-scratch in five years rather than the promised two year deadline from Musk.
