Nissan and General Motors have voiced danger warnings in response to Donald Trump’s threats of dumping the Inflation Reduction Act.
The manufacturers have claimed US electric vehicle (EV) sales will take a big hit if the ex-President insists on gutting Biden’s landmark climate legislation which supports America’s transition to clean energy.
The Inflation Reduction Act was passed by President Biden last year as the largest piece of federal legislation ever to address climate change, aiming to drive down energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
In November, Trump’s senior campaign officials and advisers claimed that he was planning to eradicate the US policy during a second term, as reported by the FT.
General Motors’ CFO Paul Jacobson told the FT the Act has a “tremendous benefit” to the EV market. “We don’t want to end up saying this vehicle program is really good with the IRA, only to have the IRA go away, and now suddenly, the vehicle can’t make money.”
Nissan’s CEO,Makoto Uchida, also spoke to the FT, he said “the world needs to move on” from internal combustion engines (ICEs) and the Act has helped to drive EV sales within the US.
