The Government of Canada has announced it will be imposing 100 per cent surtax on all Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), effective from October 1, 2024.

This tariff hike includes electric and certain hybrid passenger automobiles, trucks, buses, and delivery vans that have all been imported from Chinese auto-manufacturers.

The full list of vehicles who fall victim to the new tariffs, including Tesla’s Model 3 and Y, can be found here.

This move follows steps taken by the U.S. back in May who also raised import tariffs to 100% on Chinese-made EVs.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “China have chosen to give themselves an unfair advantage in the global marketplace, compromising the security of our critical industries and displacing dedicated Canadian autos and metal workers.”

China recently criticised the move after filing a complaint to the World Trade Organization disputing tariffs made on Chinese-made EVs.

Whilst the EU has not implemented full tariffs on Tesla vehicles from China, Canada’s surtax makes no exception for Musk’s EVs.
