Founded in 2016, autonomous trucking company Einride is forging ahead with a partnership with the State Highway 130 corridor, a major toll road in Texas. This strategic collaboration aims to build out a smart freight corridor between Austin and San Antonio, operating as a testbed for Einride’s cab-less autonomous freight vehicles.

The project will represent the first time an autonomous truck company has partnered with a toll road operator to deliver this kind of service. Einride’s vision includes plans to build out Texas’ EV infrastructure through the co-development of next-generation rest stops with electric charging facilities and autonomous truck docking infrastructure.

The partnership is not only a question of logistics but also of shared knowledge; Einride has pledged to work alongside SH 130 Concession Company to bring its Saga AI optimization software to the toll road’s existing digital systems.

Roozbeh Charli, Chief Executive Officer of Einride, spoke on the strategic importance of building out a testbed in one of Texas’ key freight corridors. He said:

“By establishing this testbed, Einride is further cementing Austin, Texas, as a hub for our American autonomous freight operations, collaborating with infrastructure operators and regulators to scale safe, performance-based deployments.”

Einride is a Swedish freight technology company that runs one of the world’s largest electric heavy-duty fleets, with operations across the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. Today, Einride has daily customer operations in a number of cities across Europe and the U.S.

SH 130 Concession Company CEO Ananth Prasad expressed his enthusiasm for the project:

“We’re proud to partner with Einride to advance our goal to make SH 130 the premier smart freight corridor in the state. We’re actively working with freight customers, industry partners, and TxDOT to implement new technology solutions and establish the roadway as a nationally recognized route for autonomous freight movement.”

With favourable regulation and major logistics demands, Texas continues to be a central hub in the build-out of autonomous technologies. Home to a number of robotaxi fleets, companies such as Waymo and Zoox are operating in several Texas cities, including Dallas and Austin, while autonomous trucking companies like Aurora Innovation have already begun commercial operations for long-haul trucking services. Einride and SH 130’s collaboration represents yet another instance of Texas leading the charge in the pursuit of autonomous mobility solutions.
