Nissan has announced its Chief Planning Officer, Ivan Espinosa, to succeed the automaker’s current Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Makoto Uchida, as well as a reshuffling of many other senior management roles.

The carmaker’s announcement comes just weeks after Uchida pulled the plug on its potential merger with Honda, declaring the end of the possibility of a merger.

The Japanese company said these new changes will come into effect April 1, after which Uchida will depart from the company and Espinosa will assume the position of CEO.

Espinosa has been a long-term Nissan veteran, joining the company’s Mexican unit back in 2003 as part of the product strategy and planning division.

Recent merger talks had failed under Uchida’s leadership after he refused to let Nissan become a fully-owned subsidiary of Honda during the integration.

Since then, rumours circulated that Nissan has been eyeing up Taiwanese iPhone contract manufacturer Foxconn as a company of interest for its next merger partner.

The Japanese carmaker recently reported a decline in global sales compared to last year as well as a 27% decline in exports, within the month of January.
