The city of Sydney, Australia is piloting a shared bike parking space scheme in the suburb of Pyrmot to reduce the risk of clutter and trip hazards on its streets.
As part of the trial the city is working with shared bike operators to trial a programme that incentivises people to park in 19 zones across the area or risk further charges or fines.
A spokesperson from the City of Sydney government authority said:
“We believe share bikes play an important role in getting more people active in their commute. […] But we recognise their operations can impact on people across the whole community, especially people who walk. That is why we developed guidelines to help share bike operators meet the expectations of our communities.”
Users will be directed to only park in designated areas on the operator’s app, with signs on the ground to reinforce the message.
The suburb of Pyrmont was reportedly selected due to its popularity with share bike riders and is an area where communities expressed concerns about bike parking.
The city encourage residents to report any issues directly with share bikes operators as they are best placed to respond quickly.
