Uber users in the Phoenix Metro area may find themselves in one of Waymo’s autonomous vehicles (AVs) on their next ride-hailing trip using the popular Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) app.

Waymo’s fully electric AVs have now become available for use in the Uber app and the service is being tested for the first time in Phoenix.

Riders will have to confirm the hailing of a Waymo AV in the Uber app which will only be made available if the ride is located within the 225+ square miles of Metro Phoenix where Waymo currently operates.

Riders will also still be able to hail a Waymo vehicle directly through the Waymo One app.

Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo, said:

“Uber has long been a leader in human-operated ridesharing, and the pairing of our pioneering technology and all-electric fleet with their customer network provides Waymo with an opportunity to reach even more people.”

Riders who request an UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort or Uber Comfort Electric may be matched with a Waymo vehicle if the route is part of the company’s newly expanded operating territory and an available AV is matched.

Uber customers in Phoenix who are keen to ride in an AV will need to opt-in via the Ride Preferences section of their Uber app in order to increase their chances of being matched with one.
