The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has supplied more than $52m in grants to fund technology-based projects that will regulate smart traffic.

The projects feature real-time traffic information, transit signal timing systems, and seamless transit payment systems. The funding comes as part of President Biden’s ‘Investing in America’ programme.

The funding will help to accelerate projects that aim to improve smart travel for millions of Americans who use highway and transit systems. The eligibility for the project has been expanded to communities that are most in need of travel improvements due to a previous lack of investment.

US transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, said:

“Your zip code shouldn’t determine whether you have access to safe, affordable transportation.”

The technologies that will be used in the developments aim to improve safety and reduce travel times for drivers and transit drivers. There will be eight different projects in eight separate states: Arizona, California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, and Utah.

Federal highway administrator, Shailen Bhatt, said:

“These grants will help deliver a more leading-edge transportation system designed to reach everyone and to work for everyone, especially those in communities that have lacked access to efficient transportation.”
