General Motors (GM) has announced it will be joining the Formula 1 (F1) championship under the Cadillac name to the 2026 series, landmarking as the first new team to join the motorsport class since 2016. The ‘Big Four’ automaker will become the 11th team on the grid, under the Cadillac name. GM intends to be a “full works” team — building its own F1 vehicles and power units — by 2030 after recently launching an F1 power unit. GM President, Mark Reuss, said:
“It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world. This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.”
Mario Andretti, the last American F1 Champion, will serve as a director on the team’s board. Back in January, F1 initially pushed back against an application by an Andretti team to join the grand prix , claiming “the presence of an 11th team would not, in and of itself, provide value to the championship”. GM has a long portfolio of racing success, with over 3,000 wins and more than 100 driver and manufacturer motorsports championships. President and CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, said:
“General Motors and Cadillac’s commitment to this project is an important and positive demonstration of the evolution of our sport. We look forward to seeing the progress and growth of this application, certain of the full collaboration and support of all the parties involved.”
The application for GM to join the F1 championship is still formally ongoing, however the recent announcements are hopeful of its success. Sign up to MOVEMNT’s free newsletter for the hottest mobility news and exclusive MOVE event updates
