The Biden administration has announced the finalisation of rules to prohibit the use of Chinese and Russian components in connected vehicles within the United States (U.S.)

Citing national security concerns, the Department of Commerce said restrictions will apply to software and hardware parts used in connected vehicles used on public roads, including cars, trucks and buses.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said, “In an extreme situation, foreign adversaries could shut down or take control of all their vehicles operating in the United States all at the same time,” according to the Jersey Evening Post

The White House announced the launch of an investigation into security risks of Chinese connected vehicles in February last year, claiming the Chinese-made vehicles use “unfair practices.”

Concerns have been raised over the impact of overhauling supply chains to comply with these new regulations.

John Bozzella, CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, commented, “You can’t just flip a switch and change the world’s most complex supply chain overnight,” as reported by the JEP

Software restrictions are due to begin for the 2027 model year, with hardware restrictions beginning in 2030.

The administration emphasised that this ban is a proactive step to safeguard U.S. infrastructure and citizens from potential security threats embedded in vehicle technologies.
